Raised Herb Garden

I planted an herb garden! This project was on my 30 for 30s list, fall to-do list, and 18 for 2018 list…needless to say, I’m thrilled to finally cross this project off my lists!

Back in May (yes, this took me almost a year to complete) I bought this raised planter from Amazon. It was only $27 and had amazing reviews, so I purchased it without much hesitation. Then it sat in the box, next to the front door for like 6 months…I’m not even exaggerating. Honestly, the only reason I finally put it together was because I was thinking about buying one for my mom for Christmas and I wanted to make sure it was nice enough to gift.

The planter ended up being so easy to put together and it was really nice quality, but then it sat empty outside for another few months. In my defense, by then it was November and I wasn’t sure about planting herbs yet. Although I live in Phoenix and we don’t really get any frost, so it probably would have been fine, but let’s just stick with that excuse.

Finally last weekend I went to Home Depot and bought a bag of soil and 5 herb plants. I thought 7-8 herbs would work best in the planter, but the herb section was pretty picked out. Determined not to let this project sit unfinished for any more time, I went to another store and bought 2 more plants. I planted them the next day and spent the rest of the afternoon wondering why it took me so long to do this project in the first place.

This whole project (planter, soil, herbs, gnome) ended up being about $60, which is a killer deal if you’ve ever seen the price of other raised planters. Trust me, the price is cheap, but the planter is not. The plastic is thick and I can see it holding up for a long time. It also helped that the soil and herbs were on sale last week. If you want to save even more money, you could buy seeds instead of the plants. I don’t have enough patience for that, but I know some people enjoy starting with seeds.

If you do decide to transplant the herbs from the containers, remember to GENTLY loosen the soil before planting. You don’t want to tear the roots or have the whole plant fall apart, but you don’t want to just plant that hard ball of soil either. Also, remember that herbs like sunshine and need proper drainage.

I’m so excited to finally have my herb garden together! It’s so nice to have fresh herbs available without having to stop at the store.

Now I need to figure out what I want to do with our veggie garden this year…

  2. This is right up my alley! I don't have a yard and I have limited balcony space but I've always wanted a herb garden. I think I can do this on my balcony. I'm going to look into this ASAP, thank you!

    1. This would be perfect for small patios and balconies! The planter doesn't take up very much space for how many plants you can fit in it!

  3. I have a small garden and this would be perfect to grow a variety of herbs. So easy to do too! I can imagine while I'm cooking, I just nip into the garden and pick out the herbs to season the dish. What a great project!

    1. You should do it! I saw in the Amazon reviews that people also used them to grow tomatoes and strawberries!

    1. That's a great idea! I used to grow a few herbs in my kitchen window, so that might be a perfect way to continue growing in the winter.

    1. Good thing the dogs are so cute and distraction from how ridiculous it is that the box stayed in that spot for so long...

    1. She would love this raised garden then! We planted a veggie garden in the ground last year and it was killing my knees and back to weed/care for it. This is 1000x easier!

  9. I have wanted to do this ever since I saw an IKEA commercial where they cut fresh herbs out of a hanging basket. I don’t have much of a green thumb but I’ll try.
